Helen E. King, 92, of New Philadelphia, Ohio died Thursday, August 15, 2013 in the New Dawn Retirement Center following an extended illness.
Born September 4, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Alma (Mertz) Larson.
Helen was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Philadelphia where she attended the Martin Luther Class and taught Sunday school for several years. She was also former president of the Lutheran Church Women, a 65 year member of the Altar Guild, chairperson of the 150th Anniversary celebration at the church and wrote the anniversary book. She was also involved in the Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and was Archivist chairperson in the church. Helen was also a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star in New Phila, Past Worthy Priestess of the Judea Shrine, member of the White Shrine, Past High Watch of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Honorary member of the Union Country Club. She was also involved in several other civic organzations over the years. She attended Wayne State University.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, James E. King who died Dec. 27, 2011.
She will be sadly missed by her son and daughter in law Lars and Jovan King of Dover; two grandchildren, Anola "Missy" (Dan) Leone of Dover and Erica J. (Scott) Barnhill of Alabama; five great grandchildren, Alexis, Andrew, Ashley, Melissa, and Vanessa and five step great grandchildren and a grand son in law, Will (Jamie) Kieffer of Mineral City. In addition, she is survived by her special friends, Rudy and Elizabeth Weber along with other close friends and relatives.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lori Kieffer, a sister, Jean Thomas and a brother, Carl Larson.
Funeral services celebrating Helen's life will be held Monday, August 19, 2013 beginning at 11am in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Philadelphia with Rev. Stephen Patrick officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Jim in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Sunday from 4-7pm with Eastern Star services at 3:45pm and Emmanuel Lutheran church council services at 7pm. Additional calling hours will be at the church Monday from 10-11am.
