Helen Kitchens Fishel, 99, of Dover passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Country Club Retirement Center in Dover.
Born in Hayesville, North Carolina on September 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mary (Kitchens) McCracken. She was also preceded in death by her husband; John H. Fishel; her son, Paul J. Fishel, and two brothers, Vaughn and Edward McCracken.
She was a graduate of Strasburg High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Kent State University. In 1976 she retired as a school teacher for the New Philadelphia school system. She began teaching in 1937 in a one room schoolhouse near Navarre. When she retired she was an elementary school teacher at West School in New Philadelphia.
She was a Regent of Daughters of the American Revolutions (D.A.R) Chapter (Manatee) at Anna Maria, Florida. She was a state chairman in Florida for D.A.R.. She was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #601 in Anna Maria, Florida. She was a life member of of the National Education Association, Life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Tuscarawas County Chapter of the Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the Florida Chapter Regents Club. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society.
She will be missed by her two grandsons; Jon (Loraine) Fishel of Canton, Michigan, and Joel (Karen) Fishel of Canal Fulton; five grandchildren; her nieces, Sandra Miles, and Susan (James) Sharp of Texas; nephew, Attorney Christopher McCracken of Cleveland Heights; along with many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 12:30-1:30pm. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 1:30pm with Elder Nathan Elliott, the chaplain at Country Club Retirement Center, officiating.
