Helen M. Horning

Helen M. Ziegler Horning, 96, a longtime Columbus resident, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, February 12, 2007.

She was born April 26, 1911 at Dover, the daughter of the late John & Elizabeth Weigand Ziegler.

Helen had a passion for helping others, and fittingly chose a career in nursing. A registered nurse who was educated at the St. John School of Nursing and Duquesne Nursing School in Pittsburgh, her career began at Dover's Union Hospital and ended in 1971 as the Assistant Director for Nursing Services for St. Anthony's Hospital in Columbus.

She was a longtime member of St. Catharine Church in Columbus, and most recently had been a member of St. Brendan Church.

Her husband, Ralph S. Horning, died April 11, 1991.

Surviving family members include: a daughter, Kathleen Urbano of Dublin; son, William Horning of Columbus and his fiancee Barb Dillon; five grandchildren, Lisabeth Urbano (Scott) Schwab, Theresa Urbano (Allen) Hart, Jennifer Horning (Lt. Col. Michael) Gimbrone, Joseph & Jeffrey Horning; ten great grandchildren, Meagan & Chelsea Gimbrone, Austin, Andrew, Addyson and Aaron Schwab, and Brittany, Sarah, Christopher and Matthew Hart; sister, Rita Doutt of Dover; brother-in-law, William Shroyer of New Philadelphia; a sister-in-law, Jean Horning Friedmann of Louisville; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by; two brothers, Paul (Wilma) Ziegler, and Herman (Edith) Ziegler; two sisters, Esther (Ed) Major, and Mary "Fritz" Shroyer, and a brother-in-law, Ralph Doutt.

A funeral mass celebrating Helen's life will be held Monday, February 18, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Church, Dover with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Interment will be in Dover's Calvary Cemetery. Following the burial, a meal will be held for family and friends in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard. Friends may call in the funeral home on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. and from noon to 1:00p.m. on Monday. A Christian Wake service will be held Sunday at 5:45 p.m.
