Helen M. Reiger, 80, of Dover, died Sunday, February 11, 2007 in the Hennis Care Center at Dover.
She had chosen Hennis from her own personal experience with care there. She had worked for nearly 20 years in laundry service for the center. She was a very hard worker, and took great pride in her job. Even while a resident at the center, she would always ask the nursing staff if there was anything she could do to help.
Born May 3, 1926 at Dover Township, she was the daughter of the late Ray & Olive Stilgenbauer Shull.
Helen put a lot into her work, emotionally and physically, over the years. An avid reader, when she came home after a long day, she would often lose herself in a good book. She also enjoyed cooking and would “cook for an army” even if there were only a few people there for the meal. With the focus more on socializing than the food itself, she also enjoyed taking a break from the kitchen and dining out with family and friends. Additionally, Helen also relished time spent outdoors tending to her flowers and making sure that the lawn and the outside appearance of her home was just right.
She was a caring, family-oriented woman who, in recent years, had thoroughly enjoyed playing the role of great grandma, and could spend hours on end playing to her great granddaughter(TM)s delight. She also had a soft spot in her heart for animals, especially the family dog, Gertie.
Her husband, Eugene Reiger, who died in 1980, preceded Helen in death.
Surviving family members include: a son, Ed Reiger of Dover; daughter, Karen Smith of New Philadelphia; two sisters, Donna (Dave) Staley of Carrollton, and Peggy (Jim) Moore of New Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Renee (Tom) Sanders of Tuscarawas; and her great granddaughter, Lauren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by: two brothers, Ray “Sonny” and Don Shull; and a sister, Ethel Zinn.
A funeral service that celebrates Helen(TM)s life will be held Thursday, February 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover with Pastor Florence McNutt officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Following the burial, a meal for family and friends will be held in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call in the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.
