Helen Brown Senhauser of Atwood Lake, Ohio, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2023, after a long and full life.
She was born on April 13, 1926, in Bremen, Ohio, to the late Bessie Elizabeth and Roland Lee Brown. Helen graduated from Bremen High School in 1944, and The Ohio State University in 1948, with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She then went on to teach second and third grades for the next 13 years in Lakeview, Ohio. Following her teaching career, Helen worked as the Assistant to the Director of the Bunce Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, and it was at the Clinic where she met her life partner, Dr. Donald A. Senhauser. The couple were married on July 22, 1961, and built a life together over the next 43 years.
In addition to her unwavering support for her husband, Helen was active with the Worthington Hills Garden Club, the Atwood Yacht Club, the Agonquin Mill, and she served as the President of the College of American Pathologists Auxiliary during the year Don was President of that organization.
Helen became known as "The Buckeye Lady," based on her practice of handing out actual buckeye nuts to everyone she met, telling them: "It’s called the buckeye because it looks like the eye of a buck, it will bring you good luck, like it does for me!" She was also nicknamed the "Amish Uber" for the many rides she provided to her Amish friends.
Helen’s life was one of dedication to her husband and her family, and she leaves her loved ones with something she quite often said — even as her health declined in her late nineties: "The best time in my life is NOW!"
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Rebecca and Norman and Wendi Senhauser. Helen is also survived by her six grandchildren, whom she loved with all her heart, Cameron, Logan, Katherine, Jack, James, and Georgia Senhauser, as well as her grandchildren by marriage, Sydney, Katie, and Abby.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don --on September 2, 2004, and by her three siblings, June Kelly, Gene Randolph, and Lee Brown.
Helen will be buried privately at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia, Ohio. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 3 p.m., at the Atwood Lake Yacht Club, 2637 Lodge Rd. S.W., Sherrodsville, Ohio; a reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Donald A. Senhauser Endowment #605652, The Ohio State University Foundation, P.O. Box 710811, Columbus Ohio 43271-0811, Tel: 614-292-2141. https://giveto.osu.edu/
