Howard W. Edie, 89, a lifelong resident of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 in the Schoenbrunn Healthcare Center at New Philadelphia after a courageous and hard fought battle with Alzheimer's disease.
A son of the late Warren and Mary (Barnes) Edie, Howard was born on August 5, 1921 at New Philadelphia.
Howard graduated from New Philadelphia High School. After graduation, he entered the apprentice program at Timken Roller Bearing Company in Canton, Ohio where he worked as a skilled machinist for over 40 years before retiring.
He married the love of his life, Marjorie Miller of New Philadelphia on December 31, 1943. They were married for over 50 years when Marjorie preceded him in death. First and foremost, Howard was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather who was a hardworking man that provided for his family. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and yard work. In his later years he enjoyed reading, Bible study, crossword puzzles and visiting family.
Surviving Howard is his son, James (JoAnn) Edie; granddaughter, Suzanne Gram (Dave) Haussermann; sister, Marjory (James) Trimmer and a brother, Robert W. (Linda) Edie and many nieces and nephews. Howard enjoyed a special and close relationship with his niece and her husband, Judy and Aden Schrock.
In addition to his parents and wife, an infant brother also preceded Howard in death.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 7:00 pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Ed Leanza officiating. Per Howard's request, cremation will follow the service with private interment of the ashes to be held at a later date in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Friends can call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
