Howard W. Espenschied

Howard W. Espenschied, 83, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, December 2, 2000 in Union Hospital.

He was employed by the Tuscarawas County Commissioners for maintenance and had worked for 48 years. Even after his retirement in 1981, he remained active in a part-time capacity until August of this year.

Born January 8, 1917 at Dover, he was son of the late Andrew & Hazel Enck Espenschied.

Howard was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Phila. He was an Army veteran who served in World War II and earned numerous medals of honor including 2 bronze stars.

He was a devoted and loving husband and is survived by his wife, the former Marian Moore, whom he wed on February 17, 1947.

2 daughters George & Kay North Smith of New Phila.
Sue Toth & companion Larry Fudge of New Phila.
2 grandchildren Jeff Gibbs of New Phila.
Daphne Ballard of Ft. Myers, FL
4 great grandchildren Trisha & Mason Gibbs, Paul & Cody Ballard

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by a brother, Lee.

In keeping with Howard's wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 6 at 7:30pm in the family's home, 102 Marlin Ln. SE, New Philadelphia with Pastor Michael Walters officiating. Friends will be received in the home one hour prior to services. It is asked that flowers not be sent. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
