Irene R. Bienko, 95, of Dover passed away peacefully on December 20, 2018 following a brief illness.
Irene was born and raised in Oil City, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late John and Valeria (Ryczko) Majdanik. A 1941 graduate of Oil City High School, Irene worked at various administrative jobs in the Oil City area before marrying the love of her life, Walter Bienko in 1949. Walter preceded her in death after nearly 36 years of marriage on June 21, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her son, Daniel J. Bienko, as well as her seven brothers and sisters: Stanley (Genevieve) Majdanik, Blanche Majdanik, Emilia (Joseph) Nowicki, Rev. Albin Majdanik, Jeanne (Walter) Kroczek, John (Betty) Majdanik, and Pearl (Edward) Swonder.
Irene was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover. Irene had also been a member of Union Country Club for over 40 years, where she was an avid golfer. She picked up the sport later in life and continued playing well into her 80s. She was also a past member and president of Union Hospital Auxiliary’s Twig 6, to which she donated her time and sewing talents to raise funds for the hospital. She loved gardening and baking, the latter especially during the Christmas holidays.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Janice Cosenza, of Dover; son, John (Jennifer) Bienko, of Glenview, Illinois; grandchildren Jaynie (Jason) Martin, of Cincinnati, and Marcus, Victor, and Sophia Bienko, all of Glenview, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Ella and Emelyn Martin, both of Cincinnati; brother-in-law Edward Swonder of Erie, PA; and sister-in-law Alice (Bienko) Szczotka of Ridgway, PA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 10:30 am with Father Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Immediately following the mass, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 from 6 to 8 pm. A Christian Wake service will be held at 7:45 pm.
