Irene H. Little, 95, of the Park Village Health Care Center and formerly of Wills Ave., Dover died Tuesday, March 30, 2010.
Irene was born in South Bend, Indiana on September 13, 1914 to Herman and Rose (Garloff) Monthi. Her youth was spent in South Bend where she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and attended parochial school for eight years, Muessel School for one year and Central Senior High School for three years, graduating in 1933 in a class of over 400 members.
On July 28, 1934 she married Charles W. (CB) Little at Holy Cross Church in South Bend. Charles was employed by an uncle from Quincy, Illinois who was the contractor for Zoar Levee and Wills Creek Dam. This brought them to Ohio and the adventure of living in the Zoar Hotel, several of the old homes in Zoar and an old farmhouse just above where the dam was being built. They attended church at Our Lady of Lourdes in the hills outside of Wills Creek. Their first son, Charles Paul, was baptized there.They also belonged to St. Patrick's Church in Mineral City, where Irene was a member of St. Jude's Club.
In 1939, they purchased a home between Zoar and Bolivar on Route 212 where they lived for 30 years. The children attended St. Joseph School. In 1959-61, Irene was president of St. Joseph's PTA. They were members of St. Stephen's Church in Bolivar.
Irene and Charles were owners of Midtown Welding where Irene was her husband's bookkeeper until their retirement, turning the business over to their son, David. In 1970, they purchased a home in Dover. They were members of St. Joseph's Church where Irene was a lector and greeter for many years. She also belonged to the Christian Mothers, Seniors Club, Regina Club, and was secretary for the LCBA>
Irene enjoyed bowling in the Saturday Night Couples League and the Thursday Afternoon League for many years. Charles and Irene especially enjoyed Square & Round Dancing and belonged to the Merri Lou Rounds Shirts and Skirts Square Dancing Club. Irene sewed many of her beautiful square dance dresses. They attended many of the National Conventions held in various cities. They also traveled with their son and his wife Jean throughout many countries as well as on cruises.
In years past, Irene belonged to Twig 7 of Union Hospital which met each Monday making articles for the annual Christmas Bazaar. She enjoyed Ceramic Class in her neighbor's home and made many large and small ceramic trees for her family and friends. She was talented and proficient in her sewing & crafts, making favors for her clubs special parties. She enjoyed playing bridge belonging to several clubs and the Tuscarawas Valley Duplicate Club.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Charles who died on February 25, 1995, an infant son, Robert Alan, a brother, Harold Monthi, two sisters, Rosalie Busch, Margaret Bickel, and a very special daughter in law, Jean Little and a grandson, Keith Little.
She is survived by her dear and beloved daughter, Rosemary and husband David Deioma of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, three sons, Charles Little of Fort Worth, Texas, Michael and wife Karen of Leetonia, Ohio, and David and wife Brenda of Dover, OH;a nephew, Paul Dean Busch of South Bend, Ind.; fourteen grandchildren, Charles J. of Guam, Robert and wife, Katie of Haslett, TX, Tom and wife, Sherri of Keller, TX; Donna and husband Larry Cole of Solon, OH, Deborah and husband Craig Danto of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL, David Deioma of Cottati, CA; Daniel and wife Jamie Deioma of Cleveland; Sarah and husband Glen Forney of Leetonia, OH, Mary and husband Dwight Pavek of Maple Valley, Washington; Stevi and husband Jack Laughlin of Strasburg, Ohio, David Little of Akron, Ohio and Kevin Little of Dover, Ohio and nineteen great grandchildren.
A Rite of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 10:30 am in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Dover with Fr. Matt Hoover officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover on Monday from 2-4 & 6-8pm where a Christian Wake service will be held at 7:30pm.
