Born November 20, 1928, in Uhrichsville, she was a daughter of the late John G. and Pia Visintainer Zanon. Irene graduated from Uhrichsville High School, and, on September 9, 1950, married Anthony “Chick” Cercone. The couple shared nearly 63 years of marriage prior to Chick’s passing on August 3, 2013. Irene was employed by General Electric in Dover, and later by Softies.
She was a long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Irene was an extraordinary baker and was well-known for the wonderful cookie trays she created at Christmas. She was also an excellent cook and her cavatelli was a favorite.
Irene is survived by her son, Michael (Christine) Cercone of Dover; her granddaughters, Trinette (Joshua) Feister and Alison Cercone; her great-grandchildren, Audrianna, Jaxson, Calyah, Caliana and Captain; and her many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, and husband, Chick, Irene was preceded in death by her sisters, Inez Armbrest and Esther Myers; her brothers, Henry and Pius Zanon; and her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A public graveside service will be held Thursday, July 7, at 1 p.m., in St. Joseph Calvary Cemetery, Dover; Fr. Jimmy Hatfield will officiate.
The family suggests that contributions in Irene’s memory be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
