Jack W. Corns, 94, of Strasburg passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at New Dawn Health Care Center in Dover.
Born on January 29, 1918, in Cleveland, he was the son of the late John W. and Margaret Lewis Corns. Jack graduated from East Technical High School in 1937.
After graduation, he worked as a bookkeeper for the Cleveland Trust Company from 1937-1941. He continued his education in 1942 at Parks Air College in St. Louis, Illinois, where he began his military training. He honorably served our country in the United States Army Air Force from 1941-1945 as a technical sergeant. His duties included; airplane mechanic, crew chief, assistant line chief, and flight engineer. He spent 18 months in the China-Burma-India Theatre, where he flew supplies over the Himalayan Mountains. Before going overseas, he was on the Air Force Boxing Team, and maintained a lifelong interest in boxing.
After being honorably discharged from the Army Air Force, he attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.
On June 12, 1948, he married the love of his life, Marilyn June Waltz, who preceded him in death on March 8, of this year following 63 years of marriage. Together they reared three children. The couple enjoyed traveling together. They were fortunate to travel to the British Isles several times, and visited all of the countries of Western Europe. They also traveled to Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, all of the forty-eight continental United States, as well as cruising to Alaska and Hawaii.
In 1949, he began his well drilling career working for his father-in-law at D. M. Waltz Drilling Company, then continued for many years as a self-employed drilling contractor. He later started Seneca Energy Corporation, a family owned and operated oil and gas exploration and production company. He retired and sold the corporation in 1994 to continue his travels with Marilyn.
From 1967-1968, he attended Kent State University in Kent, Ohio where he received certification for teaching Distributive Education at Indian Valley North High School from 1968-1974.
When Jack was not traveling, he thoroughly enjoyed being involved in various clubs and organizations throughout the community. He served on the Strasburg-Franklin Board of Education, Past President of Strasburg Chamber of Commerce, member of St. John United Church of Christ in Strasburg, where he served on the council and Board of Deacons, Strasburg Dramatic Club, member of Cypress Lodge 604, where he was Master in 1959 and 1996 and Consistory Valley of Canton (32nd Degree), President of Canton Masonic Luncheon Club, member of Al Koran Shrine in Cleveland, Tadmor Shrine Legion of Honor in Massillon and Past Masters Club, Tadmor Shrine Luncheon Club, Strasburg American Legion, life-member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, China-Burma-India Veterans Association, Hump Pilots Association, American Branch of British Burma Star Association, member of Retired Executives and Professional Men's Club, and member of the Football Hall of Fame Club.
Jack was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his daughters; Becky L. Glatt of Toledo, Jo Ellen McMahan of Dover; grandchildren, Kelleen and Alicia Glatt, Rebecca (Justin) Palmer; five great-grandchildren, Aiden Cox, Jackson Hans, John Campbell, Ezri and Lira Palmer; along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son; John E. Corns; brother, Robert L. Corns; and sister, June M. Dahn.
Honoring Jack's wishes, a private family service will be held. Jack will be laid to rest in Grandview Union Cemetery next to Marilyn. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Strasburg is handling arrangements.
