James W. "Jim" Herman

June 26, 1947 — January 31, 2024

New Philadelphia, Ohio

James W. "Jim" Herman, 76, of New Philadelphia, a dedicated public servant and beloved member of the community, passed away on January 31, 2024. 

Born on June 26, 1947, he was the son of the late Paul and Lois (Jewell) Herman.  Jim married Maureen (Tufford) Herman on August 31, 1973, who preceded him in death on August 30, 2016.  He was also preceded in death by his son, Sean Herman, his sister, Mary Jane Walton; along with his beloved canine companion, Schatzie.   

Jim's career spanned over three decades at the Postal Service in Dover. After 36 years of loyal service, he retired in 2003. Prior to his time at the Dover Post Office, Jim also worked at the Strasburg Post Office. His dedication and professionalism earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the entire community he served.

Education played an important role in Jim's life. He attended Dover High School and graduated with the class of 1965. His time there fostered a love for learning that he carried with him throughout his life.

In service to his country, Jim proudly served as a member of the United States Army for three years. He held a significant position as the assistant Chief of Staff Intelligence in the United States Army Special Service Group. Jim's commitment to his military duties exemplified his patriotism and loyalty to upholding America's values. To honor his military service, Jim became a member of the New Philadelphia VFW. 

As an avid sports fan, Jim enjoyed golfing. He followed the Ohio State Buckeyes as well as the Cleveland Guardians. He also loved coaching softball.  His grandchildren were very special to him and he enjoyed attending their sporting events and school activities.   

Jim leaves behind his children; Ryan T. Herman of New Philadelphia, and  Elizabeth Herman of Massillon; his grandchildren, LaVarion, Tatiana, and Olivia; his siblings, Mike Herman of Florida, Bob (Jill) Herman of Dover, and Sally (Tim) Simpson of North Carolina; his sister in-law, Brenda Jenkins of New Philadelphia; along with several nieces and nephews.    

James W. "Jim" Herman's legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. He leaves behind a trail of memories filled with laughter, kindness, and dedication. His commitment to his country, community, and loved ones serves as an inspiration to us all.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at 4:00 pm with Pastor David Wing officiating.  Friends can call at the funeral home from 2-4 pm.  Following the service, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.  To sign an online guestbook for Jim, visit the obituary link on the funeral home’s website.
