James Jim "Obie" Obermiller

September 10, 1929 — January 26, 2014

James J. (Jim/"Obie") Obermiller, Sr., 84, of Somerdale passed away at the Community Hospice House on Sunday, January 26, 2014.

Born on September 10, 1929 in Dover, he was the son of the late Louis and Bathildes Jurgens Obermiller. He was a 1947 graduate of St Joseph High School. On February 14, 1951 he joined the United States Army and honorably served our country. He looked forward to his annual Army reunions.

On February 23, 1952, he married the love of his life, Mary Edith Weaver, who preceded him in death on July 11, 2010. He is also preceded in death by two sisters; Virginia Beitzel, Mary Louise Harder; two brothers in- law, and one sister-in- law.

Jim retired from the Timken Company in Canton where he was a supervisor for over 32 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the Mineral City American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, square dancing, gardening, camping, taking his family on yearly vacations and in later years, traveling with Mary in their motor home.

Jim will be missed by his five children; Judy (Jeff) Hibinger of Stone Creek, Joanne Obermiller (Ed Schumacher, dec'd) of New Philadelphia, Jim Jr. (Karen) Obermiller of New Philadelphia, Jeff (Jill) Obermiller of Dover, Janice (Jim) Barkley of Uhrichsville; brother and sister in-law, Ruth (Jerry) Graef of Dover; brother and sister in-law, Sam (Jean) Weaver of New Philadelphia; brothers in-law, Ralph Harder of Gaffney, SC, and Joe Weaver of Dover; sister in-law, Joanne Weaver of Dover; 13 grandchildren, Jill Myers, Joe (Cassie) Hibinger, Jason Slabaugh, Jarrod Slabaugh, Josh (Kelly) Obermiller, Jenna (Tim) Cohill, Justine (Michael) Dilley, Jamie (Steve) Scott, Janelle (Jerry) Bell, Jeremy (Katelyn) Obermiller, Justin (Elizabeth) Stull, Jacob (Amanda) Stull, and Beth Barkley (Jordan Gilleon); 10 great-grandchildren, Kyle Myers, Clayton & Jayden Hibinger, Ashtyn & Taylor Scott, Sutton Bell, Isabelle and Alex Stull, Ashlee Stull, Aidan Record and another expected in Feb. along with many nieces and nephews and numerous relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 1:30 pm with Father Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Calvary Cemetery where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military honors. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover on Thursday, January 30, 2014 from 5-7pm. A Christian Wake service will take place at 7pm. Those unable to attend, or who would like to share a fond memory of Jim may do so by visiting the "Obituary & Flowers" link on the funeral home's website.
