James L. Carney Sr.

James L. “Jim” Carney Sr., age 97, of Dover, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2023, in Community Hospice Truman House, New Philadelphia.

Born November 26, 1925, in Dover, he was the son of the late Sherron and Bessie Egler Carney. Jim graduated from Dover High School in 1943, and shortly afterward joined the United States Navy. He served honorably in the Pacific Theatre during the Second World War. Following his discharge, he married the former Ruth Brobst. The couple had three children and shared 65 years of marriage prior to Ruth’s passing on May 5, 2012. Jim was a skilled woodworker and was employed by Geiser & Kappeler Cabinet Makers in Dover for many years.

Jim was a devoted husband and father, and he was always in the service of others. He enjoyed working with his hands - creating many items out of wood and other materials and giving them away. Jim and Ruth particularly enjoyed time spent in Florida in their later years, as well as the friends that they made there.

He is survived by his sons, James Carney Jr. of Dover, and Tom (Deb) Carney of Dennison; his son-in-law, Steve Chenevey of Dover; his grandchildren, Amanda, Jacob, Jessica, Ivie and Loren; his 12 great-grandchildren; his five great-great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and his wife, Ruth, Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Chenevey; his sisters, Lucille Alleshouse, Wilma Carney and Evelyn VanDyne.

A ceremony that will honor both Jim and Ruth, and that will include military rites for Jim, will be held Saturday, March 11, at 10:30 a.m., at the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 441 Park Ave. N.W., New Philadelphia.
