Jean Ellen Carnahan, 73, of Bolivar passed away on Sunday June 8, 2014 at Aultman Hospital following a sudden complication of an extended illness.
Born on September 6, 1940 in Massillon, she was the daughter of the late Wade and Florence "Lib" (Decker) Renner. Jean graduated from Freeport High School. She later attended Muskingum College where she received her bachelor's degree in education.
On September 14, 1970, she married Rick Carnahan, who preceded her in death on December 1, 2005. She worked as a kindergarten teacher in Gnadenhutten. She did some social work throughout the years and was an office administrator for Lauren Manufacturing. She created and managed an online, multiple sclerosis support group for a number of years.
Jean was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover where she was active with the Project Linus group, Bad Girls Book Club, and the Women's Bible Study. She also attended and sang in the choir at Bolivar United Church of Christ. She was an avid reader and talented baker.
She will be sadly missed by her two children; Steven McGinley of Canton, Beth (Richard) McGinley Hackerd of Cleveland; two grandchildren, Jessica Hackerd of Cleveland, Jasmine Hackerd of Brecksville; a great-grandson, Benjamin Hackerd of Cleveland; brother, Jack (Barbara) Renner of Rhode Island, step-children, Jeffrey Carnahan and Julie Carnahan; nieces and nephews, along with her three cats; Samantha, Molly, and Annie.
A celebration of Jean's life will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11:30 am with Pastor Dotty Hartzell officiating. Interment will take place at Dover Burial Park. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served in the St. John's United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 from 4-7 pm and again on Thursday, from 10:30-11:30 am.
