Jeanne M. Ickes, age 94, of Dover, and formerly of Strasburg, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 18, 2022, in Dover’s Park Village Health Care Center, with her daughter by her side.
Born August 12, 1927, in Dover, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Anna Stegmann Kappeler. Jeanne graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1945, where she played the cello; later, she played with the Tuscarawas County Philharmonic. She married Walter E. Ickes on October 12, 1947. The couple raised five children, Alan, Susan, Gretchen, Tim and Brian, and shared 53 years together prior to Walter’s passing on September 5, 2000. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover, and belonged to the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, where she enjoyed making friends, playing cards and taking bus trips.
Jeanne learned to knit at the age of eight, and created over 300 sweaters for Guideposts Magazine and World Vision; she was awarded a blue ribbon at the Tuscarawas County Fair for her sweaters. Unfortunately, Jeanne was later forced to give up her beloved knitting because of macular degeneration. Additionally, she volunteered for ten years at Community Hospice Browse & Buy. Jeanne was also proud of her Swiss heritage, and enjoyed her “Stegmann Cousins Club.”
She is survived by her children, Susan (Clyde) Penrod of Dover, Gretchen (Bob) Hobart of New Philadelphia, Tim Ickes of Dover, and Brian Ickes of North Canton; her three granddaughters; her six great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons; and her nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, and her husband, Walter, Jeanne was preceded in death by her son, Alan Ickes, her three sisters and brother.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Wednesday, June 29, 10 - 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 11, officiated by Pastor Dotty Hartzell. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. After the committal, there will be a lunch in the Fellowship Center of St. John’s Church.
Jeanne’s family would like to acknowledge Park Village for their excellent care over nearly the past four years, and Crossroads Hospice for their end-of-life care, Thank You So Very Much. Donations are suggested to Crossroads Hospice, 3743 Boettler Oaks Dr., Ste. E, Uniontown, Ohio 44685.
