Jerry W. Speicher passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, following a period of declining health and he was the last surviving member of his family.
He was born on April 26, 1939, to Leroy and Mary (Flickenger) Speicher at home in Franklin Township.
A 1958 graduate of the former Beach City High School he was employed by the former Wheeling-Lake Erie Railroad in Brewster until his transfer to Roanoke, VA with the Norfolk-Southern Railway where he retired in 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Corwin Haswell- Speicher whom the married on June 11, 1978. They had just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by their children; Beth Wallace of New Philadelphia, Amy (Ken) Yutzy of near Berlin, Craig (Lisa) Speicher of New Philadelphia, Dirk (Chris) Haswell of Strasburg, Jason Haswell of Waterford, MI; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his sister in-law, Linda Speicher of Louisiana, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and members of the Haswell family who treated him as one of their own; and his former wife, Ann Oakleaf Wilson.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by and infant son; his sister, Rosella Heck, his brother and sister in-law, Bob and Laura Ann Speicher; and brother, Jim Speicher; and a niece and two nephews.
Jerry was a member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church where he was a greeter, usher, and an orginal volunteer with the Carpenter Cupboard Food Pantry. When the boys were younger, he would help coach them in minor league baseball and followed the children in all of their activities.
His passion, besides watching the Tiger sports and anything on TV involving the Ohio teams, he loved big time wrestling and brace beagling where he went to trials throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia while living there. He also was a member of the Buckeye Beagle Club which was near Winfield and he held many offices there, including President.
Service will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Strasburg, 140 S. Bodmer Ave SW, Strasburg, Ohio, on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11:00 am with Rev. Matthew Wald officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Union Cemetery. A meal will be served in the funeral home’s reception facility following the service. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday, June 22, 2023, from 6-8 pm and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions can be made to the Tiger Foundation at the Strasburg Franklin School, 140 N. Bodmer Ave, Strasburg, Ohio 44680 or The Carpenters Cupboard or Memorial Fund, at the Strasburg United Methodist Church, 2nd St. NW, Strasburg, Ohio 44680.
