Joe Porter Keener, 92, of Dover passed away on Monday, May 4, 2015 at Park Village Health Care Center in Dover.
Born on January 8, 1923 in the Hoodletown Hill Area near Strasburg, he was the son of the late George and Iva (Porter) Keener. On January 9, 1953, he married Nancy Stien, who preceded him in death on August 17, 2014.
Joe attended Dover High School. He honorably served our country during WWII in the United States Army where he fought with the 13th Armored Division in Germany and Austria. He retired from Union Camp Chemical in 1988 after 39 years of service.
Joe was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover. He enjoyed spending his time outdoors gardening, rabbit hunting, fishing, and coaching youth baseball. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their school and sporting events.
He is survived by his son; Bob (Mary Lou) Keener of Dover; grandchildren, Sadie and Tommy Keener both of Dover, Tony (Lacey) Keener of Charlotte, NC, Steven Cox of Columbus, Tina Fronk of Columbus, Sheena Fronk of Atlanta; GA; great-granddaughter, Maggie Keener of Charlotte, NC; daughter in-law, Lori Yosick of Columbus; brother, Art (Doris) Keener of Dover; sister, Kathleen Jackson of Dover; and his sisters in-law, Wanda Keener of Dover, Doris Keener of Bolivar, and Rose Keener of Dover.
Joe was also preceded in death by his son; Thomas Keener on April 18, 1985; his siblings, Ruth DeVore, Dorothy (Walter) Barker, Dave Keener, Mike Keener, Reuben Keener; and his brother in-law, Robert Jackson.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 11:00 am with Pastor Dotty Hartzell officiating. Interment will take place at Dover Burial Park. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday.
