John A. Cheslock, 90, of Mineral City (New Cumberland), died Thursday, Mar. 18, 2004, in Hennis Care Centre, Bolivar, following a long illness.
Born Nov. 13, 1913, in Fairpoint, Belmont County, he was a son of the late Frank and Virginia Sweider Cheslock. At a young age, John moved with his family to Tuscarawas County where he attended school. He married the former Wanda Mae Strawn on May 13, 1938 in First Methodist Church, New Philadelphia. John served his country honorably with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Following his military service, John was employed as a machinist for the Reeves Steel Co. at Dover, and retired from Joy Manufacturing Co., New Philadelphia, in 1979.
John was a faithful member of the New Cumberland United Methodist Church. He was a simple, hard-working family man who enjoyed travel, and hunting and fishing in the Tuscarawas Valley.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; a son, John David (Patricia Ann) Cheslock of Bolivar; two granddaughters, Anne Marie Cheslock of Somerdale, and Christie Lee (Mark) Snider of Massillon; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Brittany Thompson; two sisters, Agnes (John) Helmsdoerfer of Dover, and Nettie Curtis of Canton; a brother, Richard (Helen) Cheslock of New Philadelphia; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Corpon, Julia Suder, and an infant; five brothers, Andrew, Stanley, Joseph Walter and Frank Cheslock.
A funeral service celebrating John�(TM)s life will be held Monday, Mar. 22, at 1:30 p.m., in New Cumberland United Methodist Church. Rev. Ted Knapp will officiate. Burial will be in New Cumberland Cemetery. There will be a reception in the church following the committal. Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, 246 E.
