John E. "Johnny" Winkler, 68, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010, in Schoenbrunn Healthcare, following a long illness.
Born March 5, 1942, in Wainwright, he was a son of the late Clifford Sr. and Edna Mae Hoover Winkler. John attended Midvale High School and served honorably with the United States Army in the Vietnam War.
He was a former member of the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, New Philadelphia, and enjoyed card games, especially poker.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Shirley Winkler of Strasburg, and Phyllis Winkler of New Philadelphia; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Vosick Winkler in 2000; an infant sister and brother, as well as by four adult brothers, David, Art, Paul and Clifford Winkler.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 30, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Elder Glenn R. Carlisle officiating. Burial will be in East Avenue Cemetery, New Philadelphia, where military rites will be conducted by the Dover post of the V.F.W. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
