John L. Haswell, 87, of Strasburg passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at his home following a period of declining health.
Born March 19, 1931 in Strasburg he was a son of the late Arthur and Ethel Hinig Haswell. John was also preceded in death by brothers, Pete, Tom, and Robert Haswell; sisters, June Dreher, Patty Weber, Kathryn Minnich, Beverly Freshwater and son in law, Chuck Clay.
He was a 1950 graduate of Strasburg High School, and was employed at Eaton Manufacturing in Massillon, having retired in 1993 after many years of service. John was a member of St. Joe Seniors and was a volunteer fireman for the Strasburg Fire Department for 27 years. He was an avid sports fan who loved following his children and grandchildren with their sporting events. He was a member of the 1949 Strasburg High School Football team that was inducted into the Strasburg Hall of Fame.
John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice Rieger Haswell, whom he married on August 9, 1951; children, Debbie (Bill) Menapace of Dennison, John (Linda) Haswell II of Zanesville, Steve (Dena) Haswell of Medina, Teresa Clay of Dennison, Bill (Lesa) Haswell of Struthers, Ron (companion, Keely Maurer) Haswell of Akron, Darrell “Said” (Shannon) Haswell of East Sparta; siblings, Ed (Mary) Haswell, Harriett (Jim) Duvall, Doris Minor, Nancy (Howard) Beichel, Jerry Haswell and Nick (Glenna) Haswell all of Strasburg, Georgean (Dick) Lutz and Bertie (Ron) Gray both of Massillon; sister in law, Jan (Jerry) Speicher of Strasburg; brother in law, Les Freshwater of New Philadelphia; 20 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 16 at 10:30 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Fr. Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Interment will be in the St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery at Strasburg. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5-8 pm.
