John P. “Jack” Wilson, 64, of Dover, died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at his home.
Born, Dec. 28, 1942, in New Philadelphia, Jack was a son of the late Woodrow and Wanda Stewart Wilson. He graduated from Dover High School in 1961, earned an Associate(TM)s Degree from Kent State University, and a Bachelor(TM)s Degree in Engineering from Miami University. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Early on, Jack was employed by Imperial Glass and Lennox China. He had a keen business sense, and his abilities were sought after in the ceramics industry and elsewhere. Jack supervised the construction of a new manufacturing plant in Brazos, TX, for Richland Clay. He was also employed by the Cherokee Sanford Brick Co. in Sanford, NC, and he ultimately retired as plant manager for Florida Tile in Lawrenceburg, KY.
Jack was a proud member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 975 of Dover, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and the American Legion in Sanford.
He was a free-spirit and enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson soft-tail and his BMW. Additionally, Jack liked to travel, and had great plans for a newly-purchased motorhome. He had also managed to teach himself how to play the guitar (sometimes confounding his relatives).
Jack is survived by a sister, Kathryn Mitchell of Dover, and a brother, George (wife, Barb) Wilson, also of Dover. He was a loving uncle to Melissa (husband, Scott) Rister of Northville, MI, Michele (husband, Greg) Anderson of New Philadelphia, George (wife, Jen) Wilson of Fort Wayne, IN, and Jennifer (husband, Steve) Brown of Dover, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. Jack is also survived by his former companion of some eighteen years, Janet Shirley, of Columbia, SC, and her children, Shawn and Sandy. Additionally, Jack will be sadly missed by his close friends, Mike and Nancy Becker of Dover.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Roy Mitchell, and aunts and uncles.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover, with Rev. Allen L. Bergmann of the First Moravian Church in Dover officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 3, 5 " 8 p.m. To sign an online guestbook and share a fond memory of Jack, please visit the Toland-Herzig Web site and click on “obituaries.”
