John Woodrow Murray Sr., 85, of Dover (Winfield), Ohio died Saturday, June 4, 2005 at Union Hospital following a brief illness. He died 40 years to the time of his mother�(TM)s passing.
In 1962, he founded Sugarcreek Auto Sales in Sugarcreek and operated it until his retirement in 1981.
Born March 16, 1920 on the family farm in Winfield, he was the son of the late William Clifford and Marie Emma Pfeiffer Murray.
He was a World War II US Army veteran having served in the 105th Anti Aircraft where he was stationed in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and fought for 798 straight days of combat. He received seven bronze stars.
John was a lifelong member of the Winfield United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge and the Dover Eagles Lodge. He attended Winfield School and Dover High School. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved golfing and farming. He also enjoyed stock trading. He was an animal lover.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine “Katie” Polka Murray with whom he would have celebrated 59 years of marriage on August 31. He is also survived by two sons; John (Cheryl) Murray and Jim (Linda) Murray all of Dover; four grandchildren, Troy Murray and Carrie of Akron, Michelle Murray of Madison, Wisconsin, Tyler Murray of New Philadelphia and Tanner Murray of Columbus; two sisters, Iris Murray Walker of New Philadelphia and Elsie Murray Mitchell of Columbus and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by four brothers, Clark, Howard, Glenn, and Elden Murray and a sister, Ethel Murray Demaree.
Funeral services celebrating John�(TM)s life will be held Thursday, June 9, 2005 at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematoy in Dover with Rev. Daniel Legg officiating. Interment will be on the Murray family farm where military graveside services will be held. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-8 pm.
