Joseph D. Symons, 87, of Dover died Friday, Jan. 9, 2015 in the Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia following a brief illness.
Joseph was a card carrying member of the Roofer Local #88 and worked for the RG Smith Company in Canton for 30 years. He was a Camp Ranger at Camp Tuscazoar for two years.
Joseph was born February 19, 1927 in St. Benedict, Pennsylvania and was the son of the late Joseph W. and Lucy (Jack) Symons.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a former Scout Master in Orrville and Mineral City and was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.
He will be sadly missed by his family including his wife of 68 years, Winnie (Harris) Symons who he married on Nov. 9, 1946; three children, Tom (MaryJo) Symons and Dirk (Kathy) Symons both of Dover and Deb Fishley of Bolivar; grandchildren, Dirk (Tracey) Symons II, Brandon (Stacey) Symons, Kristi (Brian) Kates, Michele (Perry) Atkinson, Julie Herron, Sara (Scott) Carter, Jeff (Nikki) Aul, and Travis Fishley (Kasey McKinney) ; three sisters, Jean Ferg of Johnstown, Pa., Vivian (Jim) Dillon of Crown Point, Indiana, and Marge Roy of Lancaster, Pa. a brother, James (Lovell) Symons of Sun City, Florida along with 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
A celebration of Joseph's life will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2015 beginning at 7pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor Brian Flood officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5-7pm.
