Joseph U. “Joe” Shutt, Jr., 84 of Strasburg died Monday, March 13, 2006 at Union Hospital.
Joe was a retired farmer, who owned and operated the Joe B. Shutt Potato farm. Following his retirement from the potato business, Joe became well known for selling his delicious sweet corn.
Born June 25, 1921 in Massillon he was a son of the late Joseph and Ruth Pringle Shutt Sr.
Joe was a faithful member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustee�(TM)s and was also a member of the Strasburg American Legion. His great passions in life were his family, farming, woodworking and bowling. Joe was an exceptional bowler who would roll three to four games a week. He was a wonderful man who will be sadly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Keplingler Shutt who died in 1974 and is survived by his second wife, Betty M. Berry Shutt with whom he would have celebrated 27 years of marriage on March 17, 2006.
He is also survived by a son, Joseph Shutt III of Orient, Ohio; daughter, Ruth Harouff of Akron; four stepsons, John (Carrie) Hambleton of Dover, Bill Hambleton of New Philadelphia, Bruce (Kay) Hambleton of Greenville, South Carolina and Brian (Sarah) Hambleton of New Philadelphia; step-daughter, Sharalee (Michael) Bowersock of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren, John, Tim and Joy Dourm; two great grandchildren, Andrew and Alise Dourm; 16 step-grandchildren and 21 step-great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Hartline and Betty Boals; step-son, Richard Hambleton.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 11:00 am in the Strasburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Court officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. Friends can call in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at Strasburg on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
