Joseph V. Skocaj, 80, of Dover, Ohio and a former Cleveland resident died Monday, May 12, 2003 in his home following an extended illness.
He was a retired foreman (machinist) for Conrail Collinwood Diesel Locomotive Shop in Cleveland where he worked for over 35 years.
Born July 11, 1922 in Ostrovica, Slovenia, the son of the late Joseph and Caroline Mezgec Skocaj.
Joseph was a World War II U.S. Army veteran where he served in the 11th Armor Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate Nazi Concentration camps. He was a graduate of Collinwood High School and enjoyed playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Shawke Skocaj with whom he would have celebrated 56 years of marriage on May 31.
He is also survived by his son Joseph E. (Susan P.) Skocaj of North Olmsted, Ohio and his daughter, Suzanne (Richard “Dick”) Farrell of Dover.
Four grandchildren Adrienne and Lauren Skocajof N. Olmsted and Kate and Chris Farrell of Dover.
One brother Raymond (Joan) Skocaj of Pekin, Illinois
The funeral mass will be held Thursday, May 15, 2003 at 10:30 am in the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 5-8 pm.
