Joseph “Whiz” Conidi, age 84, a life-long resident of Dover, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2017, in Dover’s Hennis Care Centre following a brief illness.
Born April 27, 1933, he was a son of the late Frank and Margaret Cercone Conidi. As a youth, Whiz belonged to the Seventh Street Tigers in his family’s neighborhood. He graduated in 1951 from St. Joseph High School, Dover, where he was a standout basketball player. Whiz went on to serve honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. On June 19, 1954, during his service time, he married Cherie Bevan, who survives. Whiz was employed by The Times-Reporter for fifty years, retiring as a foreman in the composing room.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Dover, and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Whiz also belonged to the Dover Knights of Columbus and the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge – a former Dover Elks member – and was a regular at the Union Hospital Healthplex. He was a great fan of the University of Notre Dame.
In addition to his wife, Cherie, Whiz is survived by his sons, Frank (Phyllis) and Joseph (Jeanie) Conidi, both of Dover, Christopher (Sue) Conidi of Canton, and Thomas (Beth) Conidi of Coshocton; his grandchildren, Patrick Conidi, Mike and Mark (Heather) Burnworth, Matthew, Joe (Jennifer), Hillary and Kelly Conidi, Brianne (Shane) Ward, Andrew (Ashley), Kaitlin and Nathan Conidi; eleven great-grandchildren; his sister, Betty (Tony) Ginnetti; his sisters-in-law, Pat Powell, Barb Bevan and Jill Clark; his brothers-in-law, Paul (Sandy), Bill and Ron (Ginny) Bevan; his many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Besides his parents, Whiz was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Conidi; his great-granddaughter, Ashton Conidi; and by two sisters.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory, Dover, on Thursday, December 21, 4 – 7 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held at approximately 6:45 p.m. Whiz’s funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 22, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Joseph Church, with Fr. Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Calvary Cemetery. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
