June D. Baker, 92, a lifelong resident of Dover died peacefully Friday, May 16, 2008.
Born June 15, 1915 in Dover, she was the daughter of the late H. Howard and Emma (Stucky) Angel.
June's family has owned and operated Baker Florist and Greenhouse in Dover since 1924 when it was founded by her late father and mother in law, Roy and Hazel Baker. June and her late husband, Richard R. "Dick" Baker operated the shop from 1958-1978 when her son and daughter in law took over the operation and have expanded the business to New Philadelphia. They have been joined by her granddaughter and her husband, Dalene and Allen Page.
June was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover where she was previously a Sunday Schoolteacher. She was also a member of Union Country Club. She was an avid bridge player where she was a Charter Member of the Tuscarawas County Duplicate Bridge Association. She was also a Golden Age Master of the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) and served as the Duplicate Director. She enjoyed her trips to Las Vegas to play blackjack with her granddaughter, Deanna.
She also enjoyed bowling in her earlier years and was inducted into the Tuscarawas County Bowler's Hall of Fame.
A 1933 graduate of Dover High School, she was a member of the high school band where she played trumpet and was proud to have been part of the National Championship Dover High School Band in 1932 at the World Fair in Chicago.
She loved spending her summers with her lake friends at her cottage at Atwood Lake.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. "Dick" Baker on December 13, 1994. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Rick and Karon Baker of Dover; two granddaughters, Deanna Urban of Las Vegas and Dalene and Alan Page of Dover; two great grandchildren, Damien and Justin Page; a brother in law, Robert Baker of Colorado and two sisters in law, Margaret Bishop and Betty Angel both of Florida and was especially fond of her many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, June was preceded by one sister, Ruby Vance and two brothers, Donald and Robert Angel.
A funeral service celebrating June's life will be held Monday, May 19, 2008 at 10am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with her nephew, Rev. Duane Angel officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Dover. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4pm.
