Katherine was born on June 20, 1925 in Massillon, Ohio. Her mother was the late Estelle Roehlig and foster parents were Elden and Julia Schmidt.
While attending the Paint Twp. High School in Mt. Eaton, Katherine stole the heart of her lifelong sweetheart, Zane. Their love story lasted over 63 years until Zane's passing on Nov. 4, 1999. Together, they raised four children that included three daughters, Julie (Keith) Stoneman, Mari (Chris) Zurcher and Jo Ann (Mark) Lorenz and was preceded by her son, Rod Spangler. She is also survived by her daughter in law, Flo Spangler and 13 grandchildren who have many stories of their grandma. The grandchildren include Keith Stoneman, Zane (Colleen) Stoneman, Luke Stoneman, Maggie (Jason) Geissinger, Nathan (Mandy) Mushrush, Arthur (Nicole) Zurcher, Rikki (Paul) Metcalf, Molly McCabe, Rian Lorenz, Kim (Chris) Alberts, Kara Spangler, Kellie and Katie Spangler. In addition, there are 20 great grandchildren that made some great family get togethers.
Katherine was well known for her party planning that has been handed down to her daughters. She once had a surprise birthday party for herself. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and was the"Queen of One-liners." She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, shopping, and collecting antique dolls. Her love of shopping was also passed down for three generations. There was always room at Katherine's dinner table for one or two more. She was known for taking food to the "shut ins." Her family always came first and her last words were "Keep the family together."
A celebration of Katherine's life will be held Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 beginning at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Rev. Thomas Dunkle officiating.
