Kenneth E. Gold, former educator having served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, high school principal, college instructor and superintendent passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Born in Dennison, Ohio on February 13, 1929, he was one of 10 children born to John and Mildred (Russell) Gold. Following graduation from Dennison High School in 1947, Kenneth was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad.
He was drafted in 1952 and honorably served our country in the United States Army. He received training in both infantry and advanced infantry at Indian Gap, Pa, where he was also a member of the Football team there at the post. He was then stationed in England for the remainder of his service and was honorably discharged in 1954.
After his discharge, he attended Ohio State University and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He furthered his education, receiving his Master's Degree in Educational Administration in 1966 from Kent State University and enrolled in post graduate studies through the University of Akron.
His career in education spanned 40 years, having served in various school districts: Jewett High School, Tuscarawas Valley, Walsh University, Conotton Valley, Sandy Valley, Dover, and Kent State University. In 1967 he was hired as an instructor and as the first contracted basketball coach at Walsh College. Prior to his hiring the Franciscan Order of Brothers served as Coaches. He retired as Superintendent of Schools at Conotton Valley in 1987 and continued to serve as Director of the Buildings and Grounds at Tusky Valley, Supervisor of Student Teachers at Kent State University, and as a substitute teacher for the Dover City Schools until 2008.
Ken was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover and its Senior Citizens' Group, along with American Legion, Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, OSU Alumni Association, Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio and was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Bolivar Masonic Lodge.
In 1947, Ken Married his childhood sweetheart, Norina Recinelli and they celebrated 67 years of marriage. Ken held his family near and dear to his heart. He enjoyed time spent together at family gatherings and supporting his children and grandchildren in their various activities and interests. He taught them by example to develop a strong work ethic, love unconditionally, serve honorably and live fully.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Norina, along with two daughters; Renee (Rob) Sattler and Kim Galmish (Jeff) Locker; Grandchildren, Courtney (Matt) Rees, Brittany (Trey) Perkowski, Alanna (Russ) Erwin, Kyle Sattler and Kathleen Locker; two Great Grandchildren complete the family; Rocco Rees and Lillian Erwinall of Dover.
Other family members-Russell and Leah Gold, John Gold, Louanne Gold, Ida Gold, Arlene and Harold Evans, Mildred and Don Frye, Donna and Rich Herman, Neva Brower and Mary DiMatteo along with special nieces and nephews: Connie (Alex) Kubik, Joanne (David) Carnegie, Susan (Pete) Peterson and nephews: Andrew DiMatteo, Dr. Dominic Bagnoli II (Dr. Vivian vonGruenigen) and Great Nephew: Michael DiMatteo. Several other nieces and nephews were special to Ken as well as friends for many years: Charlene and Wayne Swank, Bob and Dean Burkhart, Jocelyn and Bob Ely, Maxine and Glen Rothacher and Lucille and Raymond Rothacher.
In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by son in law, Gregory Galmish (1988); brothers: William, Gerald and James Gold, Sister in law, Ann Gold, Brothers in law: Mike DiMatteo and Bill Brower.
Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 from 4-6:45 a Christian Wake service will take place at 6:45. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 10:30 am with Father Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Interment will take place at Fort Laurens Cemetery in Bolivar where the Dover VFW will conduct military honors. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center in Dover.
