L. Dale Smith, 82, of Dover died Thursday evening, Nov. 30, 2017 in his home surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
Born on Christmas Day in 1934 in Dover, Ohio, he was the son of the late Fred and Emma (Sommers) Smith. In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by a son Dale Jr. and his mother and father in law, Adeline Haas Griffey and Clarence Haas.
Dale was a Superintendent at Belden Brick Company in Sugarcreek until his retirement in 1995 following 29 years of service.
He was a member of the First Moravian Church in Dover and the Men’s Fellowship Group. He attended Dover High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was also a member of the New Philadelphia Elks and Dover Moose lodges. He and his wife Nancy enjoyed spending seven winters in Florida. He also loved to play golf and various card games. He was an avid OSU Buckeyes fan and enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians and Cavs. He rarely missed his sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting activities and school events and especially loved spending time with his family.
He will be sadly missed by his family that includes his wife of 64 years, Nancy (Haas) Smith with whom he married on Aug. 15, 1953; four sons, Scott (Lori) Smith, Eric (Terri) Smith, Jeff (LaReine) Smith and Gary (Ann) Smith all of Dover; nine grandchildren, Michael McDonnell, Jaclyn Erickson, Beau, Casey, Travis, Sam, Jesse, Dani and Tony Smith along with nine great grandchildren.
A funeral service celebrating Dale’s life will be held Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017 beginning at 1:30pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor John Wallace officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. A reception will follow in the First Moravian Church fellowship hall in Dover. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-7pm.
