Lail E. Conner, 88, of Strasburg died peacefully early Thursday evening, June 2, 2011 in his home following a period of declining health.
Born April 2, 1923 in Chicago Hts., Illinois, he was the son of the late Bryan and Stella (Holman) Conner.
Lail retired in 1983, as a machinist for the former Shenango Company at Dover where he worked for fifteen years.
He was a member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church and served on the Strasburg Zoning Board of Appeals. He served as the former secretary of the Strasburg Volunteer Fire Department. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. during World War II having been in the 6th Marine Corp. Division in the Pacific Theare and China and was involved in the capture of Guam and Okinawa. He was a member of the New Phila VFW and the Tuscarawas County Marine Corp. League. Prior to WW II, he was active in the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC) Lail enjoyed gardening, fishing, and will be remembered as an outstanding checkers player. His grandchildren will remember him as a marine veteran, gardener, solar energy pioneer, nose stealer, full belly checker, parallel parking teacher, picture taker, tooth puller, genealogist, and giver of unconditional love.
Lail was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Lola (Johnson) Conner who died February 15, 2008. They were married May 3, 1947. He was also preceded by a son, Roger Conner and five sisters.
He will be sadly missed by his sons Allen (Cindy) Conner and Gary (Dale Ann) Conner both of Strasburg; grandchildren, Claire (Jesse) Bender of Coshocton, Kelly Price of Fairlawn, Haley (Mark) Elvin of Dennison, Quinn Conner of Dover (Fiance, Jill Abel), Torey Conner of Beaufort, South Carolina; two step grandchildren, Max Grossenbacher Jr. of Akron and Amy (Chip) Long of Jackson Twp; four great grandchildren Ariel Eveland and Zane Conner , Miranda and Mackenzie Elvin; two step great grandchildren Trisha Gibbs and Savannah Long; two brothers and two sisters, Roy (Irene) Conner, George Conner, Virginia Gregory and Virgilene (Joe) Bovina all of Illinois.
A celebration of Lail's life will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Strasburg with Pastor Rob Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg where the VFW will conduct military graveside honors. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 6-8pm. The Marine Corp.
