Larry A. "Butch" VanAlstyne, 71, of Dover died Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Union Hospital.
He retired from Dover Chemical after 43 years of service.
Born June 24, 1940 in Dover he was a son of the late Merle and Celia Eckelberry VanAlstyne. Larry was also preceded in death by his sisters, June Fanti, Betty Heintz, Jean Tyson and Elnor VanAlstyne; brother, Walter VanAlstyne; father and mother in law, Charles and Alma Bongini and brother and sister in law, Eugene and Sandy Bongini.
Larry was a member of the NP VFW, St. Joseph Seniors and the Tuscarawas County Italian American Club. He graduated in 1958 from Dover High School and joined the Army on the Buddy Plan with his friend of 60 years, Dick Tyree. He loved playing cards and working crossword puzzles with his family and friends and was also a fan of the Cleveland Browns and Indians, The Ohio State Buckeyes, Notre Dame and the Central Catholic Saints. He also enjoyed being with his grandchildren, especially taking them to and from school.
Larry is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Bongini VanAlstyne whom he married on June 18, 1966; daughters, Lorie VanAlstyne of Dover and Janet (Jeff) Ferrell of Sherrodsville; grandchildren, Zach, Madison and Brody Ferrell; brother, Bill Shroyer; sisters in law, Theresa (John) Burtscher and Joanne VanAlstyne all of Dover; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Dover where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military graveside services. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends can call at the funeral home on Friday from 5-8 pm.
