Larry G. Atkinson, 90, of Dover died Monday, February 27, 2012 at Park Village Assisted Living.
He had retired as a Rural Mail Carrier for Dover after many years of service.
Born August 10, 1921 in Bellaire, Ohio he was a son of the late Guy and Sarah Marmie Atkinson. Larry was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dale, Ralph and Gene Atkinson.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Rural Letter Carriers Association. Larry proudly served his country during WW II with the US Army having fought in the South Pacific where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Larry is survived by his wife of62 years, Betty J. Lynn Atkinson whom he married on June 25, 1949; children, Lynn Van Ostenbridge, Jennifer (Greg) Heter, Amy Doidge all of New Philadelphia, Steve Atkinson of Columbus and John (Sandy) Atkinson of Dover; brothers, Guy Atkinson of Massillon, Jack (Kathy) Atkinson of Senecaville, Tom (BJ) Atkinson of Cambridge; sister, Carol Gallagher of Barnsville; seven grandchildren, one step grandchild and two step great grandchildren.
Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 10:30 am in the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover with Fr. Matt Hoover officiating. Interment of the ashes will be held at 2:00 pm in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Henrysburg, Ohio. Following the burial, a celebration of Larry's life will be held at 3:30 in the Library Annex in Barnsville.
