Leah M. Carlisle

December 10, 1927 — January 11, 2006

Leah Margaret Carlisle, 78, departed this life on January 11, 2006 at home in the loving care of her family.

Leah was born December 10, 1927, to Russell B. and Kathryn (Fribley) Coutts, and grew up with her three brothers on the family farm on Seven Mile Drive, New Philadelphia.

Leah was united in marriage on January 12, 1947 to Glenn R. Carlisle by Glenn(TM)s father, Elder John D. Carlisle. Leah and Glenn raised their family and lived together for 56 years in the home they built themselves on top of Goshen Hill.

Leah(TM)s greatest joy and priority was her family. She is survived by her faithful husband of 59 years, Glenn, and by her five children: Leah Jane of New Phila, Cathy (Larry) Beeble of Columbus, Rebecca (Alan) Bosler of Dundee, Glenn Russell (Kathy) of Winfield, and Timothy (Gretchen Rose) of Madison, WI. Leah had a special bond with her 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who could always count on a wonderful time on Goshen Hill with Grandma. Grandma Leah is survived by grandchildren, David, Michael, and Matthew Marshall; Trent and Kaitlin Beeble; Jason, Andria, and Nathan Bosler; Aaron, Ryan, Jared, and Emma Carlisle; and by great-grandchildren Dustin, Dakota, Zoe, Alison, Madison, Cameron, and Lydia. Leah is also survived by her brother, Dean (Gladys) Coutts, sister in law, Dorothy (Gene) Coutts, brother in law, James W. Carlisle, and sister in law, Lois (Emerson) Vandever. Leah was preceded in death by her great grandson, Alexander Marshall, and by brothers, Russell F. “Bud” (Betty) Coutts and Eugene Coutts.

Leah(TM)s other family was the congregation of the Community of Christ (formerly R.L.D.S.) church in New Philadelphia, where she served as women(TM)s leader, worship planner, and Sunday School and vacation bible schoolteacher. She faithfully supported her husband, Elder Glenn Carlisle in his pastorship and lifelong ministry in the church and community. In 1990, Leah was ordained to the office of Elder as the congregation(TM)s first female minister, offering comfort, guidance, and counsel to many with her calm and loving presence. She was especially pleased to be able to officiate in the marriages of one son and three grandsons.

Leah and Glenn owned and operated Carlisle Canoe Livery for nearly 30 years, and Leah also served as a Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicles to help support her young family.

In her later years, Leah became an accomplished artist, painting many scenes on slate from her childhood memories. She was also a self-taught ventriloquist and excellent storyteller. She enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, quilting, music, and baking throughout her life, and loved a good cup of tea.

Leah(TM)s family and friends treasured her, and her legacy of unconditional love and laughter will live on through all she touched.

Following a private burial in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia, a memorial service to celebrate Leah(TM)s life will be held Sunday, January 15, 2006 at 2:30 pm at the Community of Christ Church, 515 Church Ave. SW, New Philadelphia (near Starlight School). Elders Rose Lomax and James Watson will officiate. The family will receive guests at the church following the memorial service. Tea and cookies will be served. All are welcome.
