Lois L. Armstrong, 101, of Dover died on February 26, 2010 at Park Village Health Care Center of natural causes.
Born on October 21, 1908 in Mullinville, Kansas, Lois was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret McSpadden Lovette. She was raised in Greeneville, Tennessee. She married the love of her life, Thomas M. Armstrong Sr. in 1932. Tom died on August 10, 1979. Together they had two children. She lived in Circleville, Ohio for six years, Logan, Ohio for four
years, and Tusculum Tennessee for 4 years and moved to Dover in 1951.
Education was very important to Lois. She graduated from Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennessee in 1932. While at Tusculum, she played on the tennis team and was a member of the Women's Glee Club. She was also crowned the May Queen. She also attended Maryville College in Tennessee, East Tennessee State University, and Kent State University. She taught for 35 years, 25 of which she was a first grade teacher in Dover Schools.
Lois was a Jennings Scholar and a Pilot Teacher for the ITA Reading Program. She influenced many to select teaching as a vocation and spent much of her
time mentoring young teachers. She was a life member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and the Tuscarawas County Retired
Teachers Association.
Lois was a member of the First Moravian Church in Dover where she sang with the Chancel Choir for nearly 55 years, and sang a solo on her 90th birthday.
She was a member of the Women's Study Club for over 50 years.
She loved to play the piano and organ and spent many hours at the keyboard.
An avid sports fan, she followed the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cavs, Indians, and Browns. Her great passion was traveling, especially with the Senior
Citizens.
She will be sadly missed by her son; Thomas (wife, Karen) Armstrong Jr. of Dover; her daughter, Marilynn A Flechtner of Tiffin, Ohio; 8 grandchildren, Guy (wife, Sue) Flechtner, Gloria Flechtner, Geri Theis, Gregg Flechtner and Gwynn (husband, Dennis) Wickert all of Tiffin, OH, Polly (husband, Barry) Trotter of Hope, Indiana, Ryan (wife, Edie) Armstrong of Dover, Jennifer Armstrong of Columbus, OH along with 12 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Her two brothers; Charles and Jack Lovette; her sister, Lynn Nell Paul, and her son-in-law, Gary Flechtner preceded her in death.
A celebration of Lois' life will take place in the First Moravian Church in Dover on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 11:00 with Pastor John Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Dover Burial Park. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served in the church fellowship hall. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in
Dover on Monday, March 1, 2010 from 5-7 pm. There will also be calling hours at the church on Tuesday from 10-11.
