Lu Christina Barnes, 88, of Dover died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014 in the Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.
Lu retired in 1983 as a secretary for the General Telephone Company after 32 years of service. She had previously worked as a secretary for the State Department in Washington D.C. and also for the late Attorney John Woodard with the Chamber of Commerce in Dover. Following retirement, she was one of the founding volunteers for Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County and continued volunteering for 27 years up to the age of 87. She was recognized in 2011 for Hospice Volunteer Representative for the nomination for the Lucille Nussdorfer Tuscarawas Woman of the Year.
Born September 6, 1926 in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert S. Lloyed and Lula (Jones) Lloyed Woods. She was also preceded by her sister, Martha (John) Polewka.
Lu was a longtime member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover, its Women's Fellowship, Golden Oldies, and a volunteer for the Carillon. She was a graduate of Baltic High School. She was also active in the Dover Historical Society, Red Hat Society, and the Dover Eastern Star. She was an avid Dover Football fan and she and her husband, Bob had season tickets and sat on the 50 yard line for over 50 years. She enjoyed playing family games and family euchre tournaments. She will be remembered for her penmanship and loved writing cards for every occasion and wrote Hospice thank you notes for many years. She enjoyed traveling and the family traveled across the entire US for paratrooper reunions.
In addition to her devoted husband of 67 years, Robert (Bob) D. Barnes with whom she married on Feb. 22, 1947, she will also be sadly missed by her daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" (Ben) Ballentine of New Philadelphia; two grandchildren, Christin Faye (Todd) Woods of Pleasant Hills, Ohio and Chad (Shannon) McGlothlin of Dover; four great grandchildren, Ryan and Liam Woods and Colin and Devon McGlothlin along with a brother, Gilbert S.
