Lydia M. Murphy

Lydia M. Murphy, 89, of New Philadelphia and formerly of Beach City, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Park Village South in New Philadelphia.

Born in Dover Twp. on August 5, 1933, she was the daughter of the late George and Clara (Welsch) Rieger.

On December 29, 2009, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald F. “Murph” Murphy. She was also preceded in death by her son; Bruce Murphy; her sisters, Betty Alpeter, Kathryn Bixler, and Ruth Sieber; along with two infant sisters; her brothers, Bobby, Donald, and Ray (Josephine) Rieger; and her brother and sister in-law, Ken and Janet Murphy.

Lydia graduated from Dover High School. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Beach City. She loved baking cookies, crafts and quilting. She was a member of the Crazy Quilters.

She leaves behind her son; Tom (Gay) Murphy of Strasburg; grandchildren; Ryan (Mindy) Murphy, Shawna (Chad) Wells, Dakota (Jessica) Murphy; great-grandchildren, Brandt, Reid, Hunter, Kenzie, Lincoln, Maddix, Brice, and Adilyn; her sister, Joyce Espenschied; along with her sister in-law, Armella Rieger.

A celebration of Lydia’s life will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Strasburg on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at 11:00 am with Pastor Jason Rissler officiating. Friends can call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will take place next to Murph at Grandview Union Cemetery.
