Lyle V. Gray, 92, of Park Village Health Care Center, Dover, and a long-time resident of New Philadelphia, died Friday, Mar. 21, 2003.
Born Mar. 25, 1910, in Gnadenhutten, he was a son of the late John Moody and Mayme Kinsey Gray. Lyle graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1928. He married his wife of seventy-one years, the former Alice Yackey, on Sept. 19, 1931. Lyle retired from the former Shenango Co., Dover, as maintenance superintendent, after thirty years of service.
Lyle was a member of the First Moravian Church, Dover, and served on its renovation committee. He was a ham radio operator with call letters W8EUK, and helped with the communications of Moravian missionaries in Central America for over thirty years. During the International Geophysical Year, he was active in setting up telephone patches all over the world. Lyle was a fifty-year-member and founding president of the Tusco Amateur Radio Club.
In addition to his beloved wife, Alice, survivors include a daughter, Donna Jean (Walter) Gursky of Brighton, MI; two sons, Larry (Lynne) Gray of Newnan, GA, and John (Linda) Gray of Wexford, PA; eleven grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Frances Porter of New Philadelphia; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Verle Ann Lenz, Florence Gray and Helen Bell; and by two brothers, Paul and John “Jack” Gray.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Mar. 24, 2003, at 1 p.m., in the First Moravian Church, with Rev. Allen L. Bergmann officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia. There will be a reception in the church following the committal. Visitation will be Sunday, Mar. 23, 2003, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover.
