Mabel Edna Hoy, 95, of New Philadelphia, Ohio died Friday, November 20, 2009 in the New Dawn Health Care Center lovingly surrounded by her family.
Mabel worked as a secretary for the Wooster Farm Bureau, New Philadelphia Mayor Harold Evans, Scott Supply, First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia, and Richard Hoy Insurance. She had also been employed at Jean Frock's and Earl E. Smith both in New Phila. She and her husband also previously operated a concession stand at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia.
Born May 21, 1914 in Woodsfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George and Bertha (Weaver) Lowther.
Mabel was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over sixty seven years and member of its Homebuilders Class. She was also a member of the Tri-Arts Club in New Philadelphia and the Tuscarawas County Garden Club. Following retirement, Mabel was active in the Hospice of Sarasota, Florida where they spent their winters. She also formerly volunteered at Hospice of Tuscarawas County and delivered mobile meals. She was a talented seamstress having made wedding gowns and recital attire. She enjoyed making clothing and blankets for her grandchildren. She also loved spending time in her rose gardens and square dancing.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Ross F. Hoy who died December 7, 1992. In addition to her husband and parents, Mabel was preceded by a son in law, David Milburn, a granddaughter, Meagan Hoy, her sister, Mary Ackerman, and three brothers, Tom and Loy Updegraff and Robert Lowther.
She is survived by two daughters, Roselia D. Milburn of Sarasota, Florida and Cheryl (husband, John) Eichel of Dover; two sons, James (wife, Judy) Hoy of Albertville, Alabama and Richard A. (wife, Susan) Hoy of New Philadelphia; twelve grandchildren, Montgomery (Pam) Milburn, Melissa (Larry) Francini, Laura Bruce, Jeff (Sara) Hoy, Mendy (Chadd) Adams, Jason (Jaimee) Hoy, Stacy (Brady) Howard, Lisa (Michael) Schweninger, Brian Hoy, Lonnie Eichel, Shawn (Lora) Eichel, and Ashley (Matthew) Noretto and 23 great grandchildren Monty Jr., Matthew, Nicholas, Natalie, Nathan, Tyler, Matthew, Nash, Jaycee, Graham, Griffin, Chandler, Aubrey, Emma, Leah, Brooke, Britni, Evan, Ellie, Eric, Olivia, Carley, and Jacob.
Because of construction in the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia, funeral services celebrating Mabel's life will take place on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 11am in Jim's Place, 228 W. High Ave., New Philadelphia with Dr. Steven R. Bailey officiating. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Cremation will follow services with inurnment at a later date in Evergreen Burial Park in New Phila. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover on Tuesday from 4-7pm. Friends may also call Wednesday one hour prior to services at Jim's Place.
