Margaret Jean Kilchenman, known affectionately to her family as Mom, Mama Jean and Granny, of New Philadelphia, joined her heavenly father on Monday December 31, 2012 she was 91.
Born Jun. 20, 1921 in Port Washington, Jean was a daughter of the late David Earl and and Mary Hazel Hamersley Roenbaugh. She graduated in 1939 as salutatorian from Port Washington High School, went on to attend Canton Business College, and later, Stark Technical College (now Stark State College) and Kent State University Tuscarawas County Branch. Jean was employed by Jaffe's Dept. Store, Earl E. Smith Co., Jack and Jill Shop and Singer Sewing Machines, all of New Philadelphia , Montgomery Ward Co. and Bazzoli Trucking, both of Dover, and ultimately retired from the State of Ohio.
She was one of the original members of Schoenbrunn Community Moravian Church in New Philadelphia, and remained active there until her health no longer permitted her attendance. Jean served as president of the New Philadelphia High School Band Boosters in 1958, and was instrumental in the construction of the first band shelter at Quaker Stadium. She loved cooking for her family, reading a good book as well as watching a television movie with a big bowl of popcorn.
Survivors include her four children, Sarah Everett of Bolivar, John (Willy) Kilchenman of Charlotte, NC, Janie (Brooks McCallister) Pritchard of Sanibel Island, FL, and Chris (Linda) Kilchenman of New Philadelphia; fourteen grandchildren, Vi (Don) Leggett, Heidi (Randy) Sanders and Robin (Dave) Angel, all of Bolivar, Brian Everett, Kim (Brad) Fisher, Shannon (Pat) Brogan and Sherry (Greg) Miller, all of New Philadelphia, Melissa (Doug) Bollinger and Lisa (Mike) Roman, both of Dublin, Jim Kilchenman of Xenia, Andrew Kilchenman with the U.S. Army in the United Arab Emirates, Gina (Steve) Bogart of Sardinia, Doug (Melanie) Kilchenman of Canton, and Marcie (Edward) O'Malley of Houston, TX; twenty-six great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Carol Gardner of Canal Fulton; and brother, Bob Roenbaugh of Phoenix, AZ.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her older brother, Earl "Buddy" Roenbaugh, and her sisters, Betty Caton and Dorothy Bliss.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, on Friday, Jan. 4, 4 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Andy McClung of Community Baptist Church in Dover officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Port Washington. Following the committal, there will be a meal in the Schoenbrunn Community Church.
