Margaret Shirley Kelly, age 79, of Strasburg, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Union Hospital, Dover, where she was taken after becoming ill at home.
Born May 28, 1936, in Dennison, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Marion and Florence Olive Renicker Armstrong. Shirley, as she was often called, attended school in Newport, where she was a member of the band. She was employed by the Riverside Skating Rink, Boltz's Restaurant, Uhrichsville, Dover Molded Products, Quality Farm & Fleet in both Dover and New Philadelphia, and the Junction Truck Stop, Strasburg. She also operated her own small business, Shirley's Novelties. Shirley's family and friends were very important to her, and she especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren's school and sporting events. Other favorite pastimes included playing softball and volleyball, bowling, playing cards, working puzzles, bingo, collecting shoe figurines, and playing the slot machines at the Mountaineer Resort.
Survivors include her husband, Robert L. "Bob" Kelly, whom she married on November 28, 1963; her daughter, Lorie (Terry) Hershberger of New Philadelphia; her son, Marion (Deanna) Kelly of Strasburg; her grandchildren, Marcus and Preston Kelly, Jessica (Matt) Craig, Jordan and Jace Hershberger; her great-grandchildren, Collen and Emilia Craig; her sisters, Dorothy Armstrong of Magnolia; her brothers, James (Ginny) Armstrong of Uhrichsville, and Marion (Jean) Armstrong of Alabama; and her several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, William "Bud" and Shirley Armstrong; her sister and brother-in-law, G. Jane and Ralph Long; her sister-in-law, Joann Armstrong; and her nephew and niece, Samuel Long and Cindy Long.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Sunday, April 17, 2 5 p.m. A funeral service will be held Monday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Hughes of the Sandy Valley Church of God officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Union Cemetery, Strasburg. Following the committal, there will be a meal and social gathering in the Strasburg Fire Station.
