Marie C. Reed

August 1, 1933 — September 30, 2023

Dover

Marie C. Reed, also known by all as “Mama Reed” passed away at her daughter’s home on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

She was born in Dover on August 1, 1933 to the late Ernest and Mildred Brandt Walter.  Marie was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond W. Reed on October 10, 2007; son, Mark Reed and siblings, Ernest Walter and Josephine Raeder.

Marie was a devoted member of the Zoar United Church of Christ, where she found solace and inspiration in her faith. Her commitment to her religion was unwavering, and she found great joy in participating in church activities and connecting with fellow members of her congregation.

One of Marie's greatest passions was being outdoors and surrounded by nature's beauty. She had a green thumb and took immense pleasure in tending to her flower garden and bird feeders. The tranquility of her garden provided not only a sanctuary for the birds but also a peaceful retreat for Marie herself.

Family was everything to Marie, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren. Many memories were made as they fished together at her lake on the farm lovingly known as "Granny Lake." It was here that Marie shared stories, laughter, and valuable life lessons with her beloved grandchildren.

In addition to being an exceptional grandmother, Marie had an openhearted spirit that extended beyond her own family. Every Friday, she hosted "Diner Day" at her home, inviting everyone to come together for a delicious lunch. Marie's warm hospitality created a sense of unity among friends and neighbors who gathered around her table to share good food and even better company.

Marie's creative side shone through in her passion for photography. With an avid eye for capturing beautiful moments, she delighted in showcasing her photographs on Facebook. Her images were accompanied by heartfelt descriptions that brought each scene to life, leaving those who viewed them feeling inspired and connected.

Animals held a special place in Marie's heart. Her dogs, Buddy and Katie, as well as her cats, Molly, Charlie, Tommy Boy, and The Girl, were cherished members of the family. Marie's love for animals was a testament to her kind and nurturing nature.

Marie is survived by her loving children, Marsha (Tricia Self) Reed and Michael (Rhonda) Reed, both of New Philadelphia. Her grandchildren Calvin, Nolan, and Clara will continue to carry her memory in their hearts. Additionally, Marie leaves behind honorary grandchildren Maddie Francis and Matthew Ebbert. Their parents, close family friends Michael and Michelene Ebbert of Hurricane, WV, were an integral part of Marie's life.

A service celebrating Marie's life will be held on Saturday, October 7th starting at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Robert Eller officiating.  Interment will be at the Dover Burial Park.  The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5-7 pm.  Those wishing to express their fondest memories of Marie may do so by visiting the online obituaries link on the funeral home's website.
