Martha Henney, 90, of the Hennis Care Centre and formerly of Dummermuth Rd., NW, Dover, Ohio died Sunday, May 13, 2001 in the center following an extended illness.
She was born February 26, 1911 in Dover, the daughter of the late John W. and Marie Kelbassa Henney and spent most of her life on Henney Hill in the Red Hill area of Dover. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert.
She was valedictorian of the 1928 Class at Dover High School and the editor of its yearbook. She received at B.S. degree in Education from Ohio University. While at Ohio University, she taught Sunday School in a mining town in Hocking Valley under the auspices of Dean Voigt.
She became a member of the Dover-New Philadelphia American Association of University Women in 1935 and worked on its committee to start kindergarten in the Dover school system. She retired in 1975 after teaching 42 years in the Dover schools.
During the Second World War, she spent several days a week at Union Hospital as a Red Cross Nurses Aid.
Ill health caused her to give up membership after many years in the Dover-New Philadelphia Business and Professional Women�(TM)s Club where she was active on the scholarship committee.
She sang 25 years in the St. John�(TM)s United Church of Christ choir and taught 40 years in various church school departments, was a member of the church school board, the Women�(TM)s Fellowship, and the committee that wrote the history of the church.
Her hobbies were reading, gardening, oil painting, and verse making, pleasing many friends with writing pertaining to themselves. In 1957, a book was published containing material pertaining to children whom she taught. She traveled extensively in the states, Mexico, Europe, Egypt, Israel, and Russia.
She is survived by her aunt, Miriam Keller of Dover and many cousins.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 2PM in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover with Rev. Steven Daniels officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6:30 �" 8:30 pm.
