Martha M. Struchen, 87, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004 in her home.
Born January 27, 1917 at Lock Seventeen, she was the daughter of the late Judson T. and Emma A. Zumbach Risher.
Martha was a 1935 graduate of the former Gnadenhutten High School and Canton Actual Business College.
She retired in 1982 after a long career as a social worker with the Tuscarawas County Department of Human Services �" now known as Tuscarawas County Job and Family Services. She took great pride in her work and especially enjoyed her affiliation with longtime judge George Demis, helping the court coordinate many area adoptions through her efforts in doing background work and assisting all the way through placement.
Martha was a member of the Schoenbrunn Moravian Church. Over the years she had been active in a variety of leadership roles within the church. She was also an avid reader and loved to spend tie with her grandchildren.
On August 21, 1958, Martha lost the love of her life, her husband Melvin W. Struchen, who died in a motor vehicle accident. She would later lose her son, Thomas Struchen who lost his life while serving in Vietnam.
She is survived by: her daughter, Marlene (Fred) Gromley of New Philadelphia, 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A private, family funeral service will be held Friday, in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, New Phila. with Rev. Sue Koenig officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Burial Park in New Phila.
