Martin J. Rini, age 90, of Dover passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 1006 at Union Hospital following an extended illness. He was born in Dover on June 10, 1916, the son of the late Mamie Gaglione Rini and I.F. Rini.
Martin was a WWII United States Army veteran who served in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. He received the Bronze Star for bravery, and 50 years later was presented a plaque which acknowledged his service in General Patton�(TM)s Third Army in Luxembourg and Germany. Prior to his service in Europe, he was a Staff Sgt. Squadron leader in Alabama providing meat-cutting instruction in the C&B School. He also served as an MP and escorted POWs to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Columbus.
A faithful and active member of St. Joseph�(TM)s Catholic Church, Martin was an usher and greeter for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Dover Elks Lodge, American Legion, Dover Historical Society and Dover Senior Center.
He was the manager of the meat department at the former Mason Foodliner in Dover and retired from Superior Brand Meats in Massillon. Throughout his life, he enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, gardening, traveling, and fondly remembered playing clarinet in the Dover High School Band.
On September 22, 1945, he married his loving wife, Edith Herman Rini, who survives. They recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. Other survivors include a son, Martin J. Rini of Richmond, Ky.; three grandchildren, Sarah, Lucy, and Woody Rini all of Richmond; a sister, Lena Eaton of Milwaukee; three brothers, Anthony Rini and Marion Rini of Dover and Frank Rini of Canton. In addition to his parents, Martin was preceded in death by a son, Michael P. Rini; two sisters, Laura Dattilo and Mary Alice Strazisar; and one brother, I. Fred Rini.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at 11:30a.m at St. Joseph�(TM)s Catholic Church in Dover with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Dover where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Calling hours will be Friday, Dec. 15, 2006 from 5 to 8 pm at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover where Christian Wake services will be held at 7:45 pm.
