Martin T. Rini, 87, of Dover and a former New Philadelphia resident died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 in Union Hospital.
Born on March 15, 1917 in Dover, Ohio, he was the son of the late Anthony and Josephine Rini.
Martin attended St. Joseph Elementary and graduated from Dover High School in 1935. After school, he joined the army as a medic and served 3 years in North Africa, Italy, Switzerland, and France. He then worked at East Sparta Ceramics where he met his wife, Lucille. After 38 years of driving, he retired from A.J. Weigand Trucking in Dover where he was a member of the Teamsters Union. To stay busy after retirement, he took a job at Colton Hardware in Waynesburg and then managed the local Musicians Office in Dover.
He married his “80 year old chick”, the former A. Lucille Wanner of Magnolia, on August 26, 1950. In his earlier years he enjoyed camping with the family. His interests always included trucking and old locomotive trains. Later in life, he was an avid wine maker and enjoyed listening to waltzes and bluegrass music. For the last several years, Martin also enjoyed taking his wife to meet with other retired Weigand drivers for breakfast meetings once a month.
Martin was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia. He was also a World War II veteran and life member of the New Phila Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a founding member and former president of the Bacon Burners and member of the Tusco Travelers. He was editor of the Ohio Smoke Signals newsletter.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, Martin�(TM)s survivors include two sons and two daughters, David of Dover, Margaret (Bruce) Rose of New Phila, Jim (Cheryl) Rini of New Phila, and Mildred Telford of Canfield; seven grandchildren, Brian, Matthew, and Mallory Rose, Joshua, Justin, and James Thomas (JT) Rini, and Jason Telford, and a brother, Nick (Alice) Rini of Hartville, and a sister, Katherine Gopp of New Phila complete the family.
In addition to his parents, Martin was preceded in death by two sisters, Laura (Joe) Bendetta of Dover and Mary (George) Wallace of Dover and a son in law, Dan Telford of Canfield, and a grandson.
A funeral service celebrating Martin�(TM)s life will be held Saturday, March 5, 2005 at 11am in the Broadway United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia with Dale Fincher officiating. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens where the New Phila VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. and Saturday one hour prior to services.
