Mary E. Dessecker, 69, of Dover passed away Sunday night, February 6, 2005 at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus following a brief illness.
Mary was born May 29, 1935 in Winfield, second daughter of the late Lewis J. and Esther L. (Craigo) Walter.
She retired from GTE/Verizon in 1991 after 30 years of service. After retirement, she worked part time for H.R. Deetz D.D.S., Garber Construction, and Kemp Insurance until November of 2004.
Mary was a member of the First Moravian Church in Dover and also a member of the Chancel Choir at the church. Mary and her husband, Melvin were the directors of the Youth Fellowship Group at the United Methodist Church in Winfield for many years. She enjoyed singing in gospel quartets and led her family in singing gospel music at churches and nursing homes in the Tuscarawas County area. Mary was a member of the Stark County Rose Society. She was a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau and had the chairmanships of several committees, past member of the Winfield Grange and served several times on the Winfield School Reunion Committee.
Surviving are her husband, K. Melvin Dessecker with whom she celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on June 7 last year; four daughters and one son; Mrs. Michael (Connie) Carnahan of Raleigh, N.C., Mrs. Kenny (Cindy) White of Gaylord, Michigan, Mrs. Terry (Cathy) Haas of Hesperia, California, Mrs. Keith (Christy) Fabiano of Powell, Ohio and Eric (Laura) Dessecker of Marietta, Georgia.
Mary has three sisters, Mrs. Charlene Zollar of Dover, Mrs. James (Donna) Mizer of Dover, Mrs. Marcus (Joyce) Blair of Enterprise, AL; three brothers, Kenneth (Susan) Walter of Dover, Jack (Jan) Walter of LaVista, NE and Bruce (Ruth Ann) Walter of Strasburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother in law, Lee Zollar.
Mary and Melvin have 11 grandchildren, Mrs. Bartley (Jennifer) Cook of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Corey (Keelie) LaCureaux of Muskegon, MI, Heather Carnahan of Raleigh, N.C., Keesha White of Muskegon, MI, Kip and Kaleb White of Gaylord, MI, Brett and Christina Haas of Hesperia, CA, Maeghan and Evan Dessecker of Marietta, GA., and Brooke Fabiano of Powell, OH.
Services will be held at the First Moravian Church in Dover at 11am on Saturday, February 12, 2005 with Rev. Al Bergmann officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park. Calling hours are Friday from 3 to 8pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover and Saturday from 10-11 am at the church.
