Mary Elizabeth Lewis

M. Elizabeth Lewis, 86, a lifelong resident of Dover, Ohio died Thursday, December 16, 2010 in her home.

Elizabeth was born October 1, 1924 in Dover, the daughter of the late Gustave and Olive (Utterbach) Bernhart.

She was a longtime member of the Grace Lutheran Church at Dover. She volunteered many years at Union Hospital where she was a Gray lady. She recently received the Helen Hershberger Award for her many years of dedication to Union Hospital She was also a member of the AARP, Tuscarawas County Senior Citizens Group, U.S. Steelworkers Retirees. She enjoyed playing jass for many years with friends. She will be most remembered for her devotion as a loving mother to her special son, Chip.

In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Lewis who died April 3, 1989. She was also preceded by one brother, Homer Bernhart and two sisters, Lucille Ayers and Phyllis Holcomb.

She is survived by three children Carol (husband, Robert) Davidson of Strasburg, Jim Lewis of Canton, and Chip Lewis of the home; two grandchildren, Holly (husband, Danny) Shane of Bolivar and Heather Davidson and fiancé Dave Sikora of Alliance; two sisters in law, Joan (husband, Floyd) Peacock and Dee Lewis both of Kokomo, Indiana and her dear friend and neighbor, Josephine Harmon of Dover along with several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth's life will be celebrated Monday, December 20, 2010 at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with the Rev. Donald Rice officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Charles at Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. A reception will follow in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5-7pm.
