Mary Evelyn Rockenfelder, 91, a long-time resident of Strasburg, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.
Born Nov. 23, 1919, in Winfield, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Carrie E. Limbacher Hall. Mary Evelyn graduated from Dover High School and went on to receive her teaching certification from what was then known as Kent State College, now Kent State University. Later in life, she would return to college and earn her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Akron where she was honored as a Jennings Scholar. Mary Evelyn was an educator, teaching first in Ragersville, and then for many years in the Strasburg-Franklin Local School District where she specialized in reading.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Strasburg and the Strasburg Women's Club. Mary Evelyn loved life, she was active in the Strasburg Dramatics Club, played golf regularly at Union Country Club in Dover, quilted, loved flowers - raising African violets, and wintered in Florida during her retirement.
Survivors include her three daughters, Kathy (Mike) Van Dine of Ashland, Becky (Lee) Novak of Uhrichsville, and Wendy (J. Dean Carro) Rockenfelder of North Canton; seven grandsons, Michael, Mark (Allie) and Matt and Mitch Van Dine, Nick (Krissy) Novak, Ben and Adam Carro; five great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Bonnie Doty of Nashville, Fayonna Rockenfelder of Ashland, and Bernice Hall of Newark; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, Don L. Rockenfelder, on Nov. 12, 2006; and by two brothers, Russell and Wilbur Hall.
A memorial service, which will commemorate the lives of both Mary Evelyn and her husband Don, will be held Saturday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m., in First Lutheran Church, 211 Eighth St. S.W., Strasburg, with their nephew, Rev. Ronald Hall of Grace United Church of Christ, Columbus, officiating. Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon in the church's social hall. Family and friends are invited to call at the church on Saturday, 12 1 p.m. Burial will be private in Bunker Hill Cemetery near Winfield.
